NIE Mission Statement
The St. Joseph News-Press, Newspaper In Education (NIE) program provides students and teachers with an invaluable, vital and effective educational resource, and involves community members, both individual and corporate, in funding its ongoing success.
NIE Activities

NIE services nearly 200 educational facilitiers in the 21 county, St. Joseph News-Press delivery area.

Teacher training workshops for graduate credit through NWMSU, in Maryville, MO

Teacher in-service and PDC training throughout the school year.

Classroom presentations for all grade levels and subject areas.

Provides tours of the downtown News-Press facility.
-
National Spelling Bee, News-Press sponsor coordinator.

Participates in the annual Read Across Missouri serial story project, in partnership with the Mo. Press Association.

Corresponds with schools on an on-going basis through e-mail, newsletters and personal phone calls.

Processes all school newspaper orders and payments.

Provides papers at a 90% school discount.

Aggressive sponsor solicitation and recognition program.

Conducts other fund raising activities including: Quarterly Block Sales, We Support Literacy Page, cMarket On-line auction, vacation donations and more.

Coordinates annual student contests: Design an Ad, Write an Editorial and Hometown Drawing.

Hosts an annual Teacher Appreciation reception after-school tea during Teacher Appreciation week.

Provides classroom teaching support through curriculum supplements including Pigskin Geography, Slam-Jam Geography, and those purchased from vendors or designed by the NIE director.

Subscribes to NIE Information Service, providing monthly NIE activities to teachers.

Maintains NIE Web Site for teacher support.

Contrubutes activity ideas to Kid’s Scoop, which is published each Monday in the paper.

Active member of the St. Joseph Area Literacy Coalition.

Graduate and participant in the Prairie Lands Writing Project.

Participant in National, Central States and Missouri NIE programs.
